Explorations in Sound, Vol.4

The live sound and music performance is like no other medium for expression and unpredictability, frequently yielding interesting sonic results, both on, and off stage. Sound checks, sound failures, the misassigned patch, unintended playing outcomes, FX overloads, calibrations and pinnacles of performative exploration can all create sources for eclectic new material.

In this 4th edition of Explorations in Sound, Furthernoise editor and curator Roger Mills, has assembled a voluminous compilation of artists works based on the serendipitous outcomes of live performance. This includes raw audio of tuning up, happy accidents, sound check experiments, improvisations, studio out takes, or any other means in which new source material was generated by performative chance. The fact that the compilation is so large and varied, represents the enormity of performative scenarios and experiences, that performers have when things don’t quite go according to plan. Some of the results have already been recognised for their inherent originality and have become source material for new works by the artists, and it is this idea that is the inspiration for the curatorial theme. As John Cage wrote about his aleatory composition Imaginary Landscape No. 4 “A ›mistake‹ is beside the point, for once anything happens it authentically is.” – John Cage (1951).

SOUNDGATE

Open Call for SoundGate – A part of Port2010, taking place in Aalborg, Denmark in oct/nov 2010.

The idea behind SoundGate is to create a platform where artists globally can contribute with their sound works and partake in the exhibition that will be presented physically in the town of Aalborg, Denmark, more specifically at Kunsten (the museum of modern art), Utzon Centre (the architectural centre) and Platform4 (a great space where creative people can realize their projects).

With this selection of spaces, the aim is to target a broad audience in order to promote sound art and “cutting edge”-music to new and hopefully curious ears.

At the selected spaces, listening posts will be set up. The audience will only be able to access the sound through high quality headphones and track information will be displayed on a screen. This means that there’s no audience interaction such as skipping, fast-forwarding or stopping. This clearly challenges new concepts such as ”on-demand” and requires old school skills such as patience, and thus hopefully stimulates focus on the actual work. The project only requires one action from the ”user”: Listening!

All submissions are archived online at: http://soundofebb.wordpress.com. In following the open call, a specially curated compilation was created from the sounds that reflect a diversity of creative processes and ideas that begin to approach a collective understanding of the crisis through individual experience. Sound of Ebb is a branch project of ‘The End of Something.. A collection of reflections on the global crisis’ that was produced in collaboration with Volume in 2009.

Zeppelin in 2009 is dedicated to the difficult relationship between public and private sectors and in parallel to the development of Internet 2.0, which now undergo a process of redefinition increasingly uncertain and paradoxical. More than a decade ago that Scott McNealy, Sun Microsystems, has predicted the death of privacy. For the first time in history, almost everyone is able to disseminate informations from any point on earth. But now the power and the fear justify the exercise of control, and, as a corollary, the involved arguments and the considered normal behavior that lead to loss of privacy.
